2020 Winter Mi Xiang ( honey aroma) Oolong
Situated in the central-eastern part of the Island of Taiwan, facing mountains on one side and the sea on the other, Hualien is not only a choice destination for relaxing and resourcing vacation, it is also a very suitable climate and natural environment for our friends, the little leafhoppers, to proliferate.
This tea garden is a piece of land on a large farmland that also grows a great variety of organic fruit and vegetable, and this abundant natural environment was elected by the leafhoppers as a place to live and multiply.
Hualien is most famous for its honey-scented black tea, but the tea masters considered that this large-leaf oolong variety has a strong character, so they chose to roll the tea into balls to fully express the variety’s particular profile. We also chose to roast the tea to reduce the water content which gives the tea a characteristic fullness and rounded mouthfeel.
We let the tea rest for a year which allowed for the roast fire to recede and the sharpness to round out. All that is left is the lovely roasted longan aroma. When the water is poured from the kettle into the teapot, it releases a wonderfully self-contained and long-lived fruity aroma.
From the second infusion onward, the brew becomes slowly stronger, but the astringency turns wonderfully. When the brew enters your mouth, it bears a slight bitterness, but as it slides down the throat, echoes of longan honey are released and fill the entire mouth. This oolong’s finish is rich and varied, and will imprint the drinker’s mind for a long, long time to come.
