When Taiwan’s most renowned black tea variety, Hong Yu, meets tea garden’s most beloved little friend, the leafhopper, this surprising pair is met with great enthusiasm by tea masters!

A few years ago, I visited a friend in Nantou. I was introduced aware of a tea farmer who manages his garden according to natural farming principles, which was testified by the many marks left on his trees by leafhoppers. I decided to buy some fresh leaves and take up the challenge of making a black tea backed up by my Oriental Beauty experience!

Hong Yu ( Ruby 18)  is a large leaf variety, but the tips that have been bitten are slightly smaller than usual. However, the time it takes for the water to evaporate from the leaves is even more than what’s needed for Oriental Beauty.

When the leaves are rolled, they release an enchanting fragrance that percolates throughout the entire factory. Apart from its exceptional fragrance, when it enters the drinker’s mouth, this tea has a sweet, caramel-like savor and a full and pineapple juice-like texture.
